"Millions of employees walk through our organizations every day not just to get paid but to be inspired by the vision we have for them", says Vineet Nayar, Founder Chairman, Sampark Foundation and Former CEO of HCL Technologies a $6 billion global information technology services company. Vineet Nayar, an acknowledged management visionary, a radical thinker and the author of Harvard Business Press bestseller Employees First, Customers Second: Turning Conventional Management Upside Down would recount how this idea channelized the energy and passion of 100,000 employees who helped increase HCL's revenues and market cap over six times! More interestingly he will also share his journey over last 5 years of how Employee First idea is helping Sampark Foundation energize over 200,000 teachers and transform learning outcomes for 7 million disadvantaged children across 76,000 rural schools in India for just $1 per child PA. Nayar strongly believes in the power of putting humans right at the centre of every transformation to make impossible, possible.

Across the world, senior managers and team leaders are increasingly frustrated by conflicts arising from what we refer to as multiteaming—having their people assigned to multiple projects simultaneously. But given the significant benefits of multiteaming, it has become a way of organizational life, particularly in knowledge work. It allows groups to share individuals’ time and brainpower across functional and departmental lines, and it increases efficiency as well. Multiteaming also provides important pathways for knowledge transfer and the dissemination of best practices throughout organizations. While the advantages of multiteaming are clear and quantifiable, its costs are substantial and need to be managed – from overlapping teams of independent projects to weakened group cohesion, identity, and trust due to fluctuation of team members, not to mention the stress, fatigue, and burnout experienced by individual employees. All around, it’s a significant investment of time and effort. But organizations pay a much higher price when they neglect the costs of multiteaming in hot pursuit of its benefits. In his keynote session Mark will discuss why multiteaming is so prevalent in today’s economy, examine the key problems that crop up for organizational and team leaders, and provide recommendations for how to solve them based on his research spanning 15 years.

This keynote session will offer practical guidance for teams and organizations who are serious about success in the modern economy. With so much riding on innovation, creativity, and spark, it is essential to attract and retain quality talent—but what good does this talent do if no one is able to speak their mind? The traditional culture of “fitting in” and “going along” spells doom in the knowledge economy. Success requires a continuous influx of new ideas, new challenges, and critical thought, and the interpersonal climate must not suppress, silence, ridicule or intimidate. Based on Amy C. Edmondson’s new book „The Fearless Organization - Psychological Safety at Work: How to Ensure Learning and Innovation in the Knowledge Economy” (coming out in November 2018), this keynote session will explore this culture of psychological safety, and provides a blueprint for bringing it to life. The road is sometimes bumpy, but succinct and informative scenario-based explanations provide a clear path forward to constant learning and healthy innovation.

This interactive panel will focus on some of the current challenges facing the CHRO. As the head of the HR organization, the CHRO’s role has evolved significantly over the last few years. From being a strategic business partner responsible for the organization’s human resources, the CHRO is now expected to be an active and integral part of the C-Suite, a true business leader with well-rounded acumen and an in-depth knowledge of the industry. As the CHRO’s role shifts, so too does that of HR itself. As organizations pivot towards high-tech enabled, and more ’agile’ operating models, HR has a mandate like never before to augment not only the employee experience, but be a part of driving the business towards its goals by keeping on top of a number of key changes in the talent marketplace. Join this panel discussion to learn more about these evolutions in HR, and the emergent role of the CHRO as a leader, ambassador, and business expert.

Modern organizations require effective team communication and collaboration. Soft skills, leadership competencies and an understanding of how to apply those skills in a more malleable, people-focused setting has become a critical requirement to become an effective people manager. As practitioners know, collaboration brings a set of challenges. However several research confirmes that 70% of people leave jobs because of relationships issues. A typical manager will lose 25% of his time to unnecessary conflict. Mastering people skills is not a soft option but fundamental to business success and impacts directly on morale, productivity and the bottom line. This inspiring session with Shay McConnon is a highly engaging keynote, which will enable you to use the latest development in business psychology to understand the real drivers of motivation, engagement and effective communication. There are many studies that have outlined the next projected global economic challenges. This is happening when global growth has never looked better (current fluctuations notwithstanding), and most entities are planning and preparing for further growth. However, there is a looming crisis which will impact each and everyone who is associated with any and all parts of the organization. In 1950, 8% of the world’s population was aged 60 years and older by 2013 this had reached 12% (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, 2013). This demographic transformation will gather momentum in the coming years, with predictions that by 2050, 20% of the world’s population will be aged 60 years and over. As we race towards this figure, this will impact across many human, employee, managerial, productivity and societal areas. Shortly, we will be managing older employees. We will be managing employees who will be required and need to take time off to look after their elderly family. The level of healthcare professionals across all associated areas are falling, and many healthcare systems are already creaking under at the weight of years of underinvestment match by an ever-growing growing older population. It is evident that human capital is in short supply, so it is obvious that a solution needs to be found to address these trends. This is where HR will need to have an impact to counterbalance new evolutions in the employee landscape, and this where new digital initiatives will be forthcoming in assisting and managing ’new work’.

The impending collision of infotech and biotech advances will alter the way we work, live and interact. We are all going to be newbies as we encounter the unexpected (Schwab, 2016), and learning to adjust and adapt will be essential to finding ourselves and our new roles. In this context of dizzying change and constant redefinition, learning agility becomes the most essential human skill of all. Given these circumstances, this should be the golden age for the discipline of learning and development; but I fear it will not be. The problem is not with need or relevance to an ever-changing future; but with the tradition and practices of the profession itself. L&D needs to be rebooted, if it is to be part of this new future. At a time when learning is the essential skill, L&D should be leading the way as opposed to holding on to its old models, approaches and measures. Far and away the biggest contributions L&D can make in driving business results and organizational success is through experience-based, business-driven talent development programs that use the workplace, community and each other as learning laboratories. This is not a new insight. It is, in fact, centuries old; but just not well practiced in companies. If you tell me, I will listen If you show me, I will see If you let me experience, I will learn Lao Tze Fast forward to John Dewey and Maria Montessori, and the message is the same for children and schools. Their insights did not escape Albert Einstein. “I never try and teach my students anything. I only try to create an environment in which they can learn.” Albert Einstein Come and see how L&D can reinvent itself, lead the way in navigating the future and drive meaningful business results.

Employee experience is critical for business success, and according to practitioners, onboarding new employees is one of the most critical factors in achieving the desired level of that experience. Thankfully that goal is easier to reach than ever before in this current age of digitization. A structured, tech-supported, and well-executed onboarding program ensures that the organization delivers on its promises made in the recruitment process, while increasing job satisfaction, performance, and commitment, and improving talent retention. According to Talmundo, “a longer and more consistent employee onboarding program allows new hires to gain full proficiency 34% faster than those in shorter programs”. In this session we will learn how to embrace and utilize digital technology in order to achieve effective employee onboarding within the organization, improve employee experience, and thus get closer to achieving our business goals in the process.

Organizational agility is increasingly acknowledged as being critical to successfully adapting to rapidly changing business and work environments – and for future-proofing our organizations and workforces for the so-called ‘future or work’. So what are the implications, challenges, and opportunities for HR? HR clearly plays a pivotal role in building an agile organization, leading the way in business-critical areas such as organizational development, talent strategy, culture and in creating the overall employee experience. HR strategy and processes, and our ways of working need to be in tune with what an agile organization requires to be successful today and how it prepares for the future. But what does AgileHR really mean for you and your organization? What does it look like in practical terms and what is so different, if anything, than how we have run HR in the past? Drawing on research and experience from a range of organizations, Kevin Empey will address these topics and will help you assess how agile your HR function and related processes are today.

MARK MORTENSEN | The Secret of Great Collaboration
14:00 - 15:40

Over the years, as teams have grown more diverse, dispersed, digital, and dynamic, collaboration has become more complex. But though teams face new challenges, their success still depends on a core set of fundamentals. As J. Richard Hackman, who began researching teams in the 1970s, discovered, what matters most isn't the personalities or behavior of the team members; it's whether a team has a compelling direction, a strong structure, and a supportive context. Based on his research, Mark Mortensen will explain how teams need those three "enabling conditions" now more than ever. This masterclass will detail what team leaders should do to establish the foundations for success, to foster a common identity and common understanding among team members, and teach how to evaluate a team's effectiveness, providing an assessment leaders can take to see what's working and where there's room for improvement.

CHRO ROUNDTABLE | MARK MORTENSEN | The CHRO Leadership Challenge
11:10 - 12:50

An organization will survive and thrive – or become irrelevant and die – based on one very simple thing – how well the organization and its strategy fit with environmental demands. Maintaining fit is easy to talk about and understand, but very complex and difficult to carry out in practice. A critical first step is to understand what makes an organization what it is – what drives its employees behaviors and its ability to compete in the market. In these sessions we explore the key components that constitute an organization’s DNA and what makes it unique. We divide our discussion into three core systems: Design, Influence, and Culture. Importantly, these three systems are interconnected and in many instances, different sides of the same coin. We will explore the critical role that CHRO and HR more broadly play in ensuring successful fit.

M. TAMRA CHANDLER | Harnessing the Power of a Modern Approach to Performance Management to Drive and Sustain Culture Change
14:00 - 15:40

As HR leaders, it’s not hard for us to recognize the power of culture. A strong and positive culture attracts talent, enables innovation, creates strong teams, and ultimately drives performance. While we frequently hear the quote, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast ,” Shawn Parr’s assertion that “culture is the environment in which your strategy and your brand thrives or dies a slow death” has become a foundational concept in our work at PeopleFirm. In working with global clients to evolve their organizations’ cultures, we’ve learned that Performance Management can be one of the most powerful processes to signal, drive, and sustain cultural change. Why? Because performance management plays a critical role in defining what is expected, important, and valued in any organization. Join M. Tamra Chandler in a master class to explore Performance Management’s link to culture and how your organization can adopt any or all of the Eight Fundament Shifts to drive sustained and meaningful culture change in your organization. Tamra will highlight key concepts from her book, How Performance Management is Killing Performance and What to Do about It, while guiding you through an exploration of modern performance ideas that will help you truly evolve your culture.

CHRO ROUNDTABLE | AMY EDMONDSON | Big Teaming for Audacious Innovation
14:00 - 15:40

Machiavelli famously wrote, “There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things.” Amy C. Edmondson’s book of the same title, co-written with Susan Salter Reynolds, explores large-scale systemic innovation that calls for “big teaming”: intense collaboration between professions and industries with completely different mindsets. This demands leadership combining an expansive vision with deliberative incremental action — not an easy balance. To explore the kind of leadership required to build the future we need, this roundtable session will explore the story of Living PlanIT. This award-winning “smart city” start-up was launched with a breathtakingly ambitious goal: creating a showcase high-tech city from scratch to pilot its software—quite literally setting out to build the future. This meant a joint effort spanning a truly disparate group of software entrepreneurs, real estate developers, city government officials, architects, construction companies, and technology corporations. By taking a close look at the work, norms, and values in each of these professional domains, you will gain new insight into why teaming across fields is so challenging, and get to learn powerful lessons in seeking to drive audacious innovation.

In a truly Agile organization, the HR team must take on a new role, becoming a core part of the organization’s strategy, execution, and planning. HR is central to Agile transformation itself. The process can be difficult for individual employees who thrived under a traditional structure and can struggle with the new team dynamic and reductions in their individual authority. Bennie Covington is a member of the Scrum Alliance HR Council and CPO of Integrated Financial Settlements. In his keynote, Bennie will discuss the new role of HR in Agile organizations, blending research and success stories to reveal how successful Agile HR teams can overcome potential roadblocks to change and take on the core project of building company culture.

In this presentation, Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez will show us how fewer, more effectively elected and managed projects are the key to strategic and long-term success. Using his own research and work experience he explains how and why those organizations that focus on just a few key initiatives can perform significantly better than unfocused organizations, not only financially but also in achieving their strategic objectives and motivating their staff. Becoming a focused organization involves a radical change in the way companies are organized and the way they select and manage projects. The good news is that project-based work is truly human-centric and subsequently HR is going to have a crucial role in this transformation. Simply put; we will all be project managers soon (yes, HR managers too), and we must learn how to use the new rules to maximum effect

It’s quite easy to get a bit wrapped up in process, strategy, internal dynamics, and industry-specific discussions. HR professionals, like all business professionals understand that times are changing extremely quickly – and yet the principles for success remain relatively simple. As businesses evolve to become more decentralized, agile, culturally invigorated, and adaptive, it’s obvious that HR has a lot to consider. To cut through some of the noise surrounding these big topics, the Talking Heads session will be a platform to exchange earnest ideas on how HR can become a strategic part of the business and enable success. As the HR function begins to looks like something completely different to what many have become previously accustomed, it’s time to think about how HR can transcend the organization, and forge a whole new conception of business success. From helping people to achieve personal growth and meaning, through to building employment practices that contribute to wider social and economic improvement; it’s time to get excited about where HR is heading, and the leaders who are going to help guide the way!

Established in 1863, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an independent, neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed violence. It takes action in response to emergencies and promotes respect for international humanitarian law and its implementation in national law. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, ICRC employs some 15,500 people in over 80 countries and territories. The ICRC is funded mainly by voluntary donations from governments and from national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The complexity of today’s conflicts and the tremendous impact on human lives across the world is making humanitarian work increasingly challenging. In this context and to ensure access to the people its aims to protect, while not outsourcing risk and remaining neutral ICRC has challenged its traditional approaches and drawn upon two major assets: its strong purpose and its people to rethink its strategies for global people engagement. In this session you will learn more about how ICRC embarked on this transformational journey and which key levers were activated to reshape its organizational culture and drive global engagement to protect the world’s most vulnerable populations in an increasingly complex and volatile world. You will learn more about: • Identifying and leveraging the key drivers that unite a globally dispersed workforce around one strong purpose • Rethinking “the us” to drive impact and culture

High on the list of priorities for HR professionals at the moment is how Digital Technologies are going to augment HR and the workplace. A recent IBM Global C-Suite survey indicated that digital skills were the number one upcoming priority for CHROs; yet only 11% of the same CHROs reported that their organizations were staffed with employees skilled enough to deal with the technical changes. However, it’s not just tech skills that are in need, but soft skills too. There are two types of companies today—the quick and the dead; and when leaders in businesses hesitate, they become lost leaders, literally. HR has never been known as particularly forward looking or fast-moving; and while this reactive stance may have been acceptable twenty or thirty years ago, it is not now. Traditional HR practices, such as workforce planning, are not wired to this new, “real-time” reality. These conventional practices take too long, are linear &sequential, not parallel, tend to be too risk-averse; and consequently more often result in lost opportunity as opposed to stronger competitive and market positioning. By applying the principles of agility and capitalizing on the latest research, HR can take a leading role in both anticipating and preparing for different possible futures. Among the key topics addressed in this session are: • Agile HR and the scarcest resource of all • The 2% and 5% rule for talent deployment • The unforeseen (but identifiable) disruptions impactingcompanies and industries • Types of scenarios to prepare organizations and the value of probabilistic thinking • Responding to seven megatrends….Now • Compelling evidence that influences audiences and stakeholders

Whatever organisation change you are in or planning, conflict and tension are your biggest allies. Navigating by tension is at the heart of thriving adaptive organisations, those that can adapt to changing business contexts in a VUCA world. Conflict is the vital data you need on the difference between beliefs and what actually is. So to create an adaptive organisation you ought to fully include all three conflict arenas: 1. Human. Conflict and tensions within each of us, and between us. 2. Work. The conflict between our roles and accountabilities. 3. Stakeholder. The conflict between different stakeholders in the organisation, such as investors, management, staff, customers, suppliers, cities, and the planet. Graham will cover how every OD change will benefit if the gold in all three conflict arenas is harnessed, and you can do to get the gold out of conflict.

Instead of waiting for others to act, HR---using the principles of agile workforce planning—can help organizations see around corners and prepare for different futures. This role of “being a lead- time ahead” is particularly important in times of rapid change, active disruption and increased pressures to innovate. Consider the potential impact of just this partial list of possibilities. • Artificial Intelligence, robots and automation • Threats from traditional and emerging competitors • Changing consumer preferences • Economic conditions and trading policies • Supply of skilled talent and the Gig economy • Constant volatility and disruption • Global interconnectedness • Security threats • Laws and compliance requirements • Planet sustainability • Demographics Increasingly, how organizations anticipate and prepare for these “might be” futures will determine their ability to not just survive, but thrive. So what are we doing now to better prepare for these inevitable forces? This final CHRO Roundtable is a highly interactive session, building on David Forman’s earlier keynote presentation, in which participants focus on these possible futures, and shareactions that they can take now to mitigate potential problems ahead.
